The law firm of Demissie & Church is pleased to announce that it has successfully defended The Ethiopian Sport Federation in North America in the lawsuit filed by its former board member, Asfaw Teferi.

In August 2016, the trial court dismissed the lawsuit filed by Asfaw and ordered him to pay ESFNA $24,051 in legal fees and costs. Instead of complying with the court’s judgment, Asfaw chose to appeal. Last month, Attorney Derege Demissie appeared before the California Appeals Court to argue the case on behalf of ESFNA.

On March 20, 2019, the three judge panel of the California Appeals Court issued a unanimous decision rejecting all of the arguments presented by Asfaw’s attorney and affirmed the dismissal of Asfaw’s lawsuit. The Appeal Court also awarded ESFNA additional attorney’s fees and costs associated with the appeal. The additional amount, which is expected to be far in excess of the amount already awarded, will be determined shortly.

We are privileged to represent this great Ethiopian institution and will continue to provide ESFNA with vigorous legal defense.

We hope this outcome serves a lesson to Asfaw and others like him.
